New to firearms and looking for the best place to get started? You’ve found it! Start your self-defense journey by taking the class that will help you understand the components and functions of your gun, what makes it the right (or wrong) gun for you, and how to properly handle the gun through dry-fire and live-fire drills.

The first 8 hours (Powers to Arrest & Use of Force) must be completed in person, in a classroom setting, with an instructor physically present, at an authorized training facility. SKPA does currently offer Powers to Arrest & Use of Force. This course follows the initial 8-hour guard card course required by BSIS. These 32 hours of in-person security training are needed to follow the Business and Professions Code and to maintain employment in the security industry. It satisfies both of the following requirements – Firearms Permit and Firearms Requalification.

This course is a mandatory training class to apply for the Exposed Firearm Permit through the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). Must be 21 years old with a current BSIS Security Guard Card, Proof of US Citizenship or permanent residency and proof of passing the PSI exam. Must bring the original document to class. No felony or prohibitive misdemeanor convictions. Classroom training must be taken within 30 days of the firearm qualification day. (This is a two-day course) You get two calibers when taking the class.

Before your firearms permit can be renewed, at the end of your second year for BSIS, you must complete this training at your fourth re-qualification. (Written test and qualification)

Completion of at least 8 hours of classroom instruction on the carrying and use of a firearm, passing a Bureau-approved written firearm exam with a minimum score of 85%, Discharging 50 rounds a minimum of two (2) times, one (1) round for practice and one (1) round for score.

This approved BSIS Handcuffing Course will teach security professionals how to properly handcuff (restrain) a suspect.

The course includes instruction in, but not limited to, the following:

• Positioning for handcuffing using the safest approach
• Handcuffing resistive subjects
• Removing handcuffs
• Using various types of cuffs
• Understanding general handcuffing guidelines

This continuing education training course teaches the concepts of the use of force, including continuum levels, assessing a situation, the type of force to use, and how to use reasonable force. The course concludes with examples of report writing for use-of-force incidents.
